Car workers prefer Tata takeover
Car workers union Unite has said India's Tata Group is its preferred choice to take over the running of Jaguar Land Rover should it be sold.

Ford has said it plans to sell UK-based Jaguar and Land Rover, which has plants across the West Midlands and in Merseyside, by early 2008.

Unite has said it would prefer it if Jaguar Land Rover stayed as part of parent company Ford.

But, if a sale is decided, it felt Tata had a good manufacturing background.

Tony Woodley of Unite said the workforce's best interests would be served by finding a partner with an established presence and background in manufacturing.

He said the stewards had made their decision based on the reports from the presentations made by all the short listed bidders.

Jaguar has about 10,000 staff at sites in Coventry, Birmingham and Liverpool, while Land Rover employs about 9,000 in the West Midlands and Warwickshire.

Earlier this year Ford sold off its Aston Martin brand, also based in Warwickshire.

Ford has said it has had a number of bidders for its Jaguar Land Rover divisions.
