Hi folks,

i was wondering if it is possible to throw away the rear brakes and put the 282mm front brakes on the rear and an even bigger brake system on the front?

i hope you can help me

the first thing you need to calculate is what is the braking requirement?

To put something as powerfull as a 282mm front set up on the rear would need to be matched with something enormously powerful on the front, but then you would most likely be massively overbraked making the car dangerous.

Also you would loose the handbrake making it illegal.

What do you need the brakes to do?

it was just an idea cause i found a 330mm brake for the front...

thought about it cause i had the idea to build a ZS race car and especially for long distance races you need quit good brakes...

but if i did so, i wouldnt have a car for street driving whick sucks a lot so i think i wont do it

If you are doing circuit racing then you don't need any special on the rear, going back to some of the thundering BTCC cars of a few years ago they had tiny rear brakes. You generally would have an adustable pedal box so that you could almost wind off all the rear braking for dry and only add a touch for the wet.

In rallying you would run more rear brakes, esp for gravel and also in order to help with LFB balance.

Before building anything for motorsport though, check the regulations as you will usually find most lower formulas/classes restric things like brakes of OE spec/sizes

Beware some of the 330mm brake kits that are claimed to fit MG ZS/R45 as many dont owing to the offset of the wheels. There is one Wilwood custom made kit that runs a very narrow reservoir caliper and adapted brakets to enable it to run inside std wheels but you are looking around £1700 for a set, its very good but expensive if its not going to be used to its full potential.

Thought about racing at the 24 hours of nuerburgring which is of course a circuit race but thought about a bigger brake on the rear because of the extrem conditions

this also solves the wheel problem, cause i would anyway use racing wheels and its a custom fittes braking system for the front.

I was just interested if its technically possible to put the 282mmm brake on the rear

I would say for that type of racing and on a FWD car they are totally wrong. You should really check what the regulations permit in the class you would run in first. Also check things like wheels as some classes also limit what wheels you can run too.

As a starting point you need to know what weight you will be running at, what the weight distribution is approx and then tyre spec so you can start calculating what your braking spec can be.

If you are looking at endurance racing then I would say you would be much better with the ZR160 as its dominated endurance racing in its class and won over all on may events. Those cars were running a 290mm front rotor with AP racing 4 pot calipers and std rear set up but with an AP 7 position rear limiter valve.
