It's been on the radio news this morning that parents qualifications and social background could be taken into account when applying for a university place.
This could affect our youngest, who is currently studying A levels. Both of his parents are university graduates and in respectible jobs running departments in schools. Both brother and sister are currently at university. If the proposals see any light this could be a severe disadvantage for the lad.
I would argue, however, that by todays standards he is, himself, disadvantaged. He comes from a stable family background. Parents are still together (nearly 23 years of marriage). He (nor any of the family) has a police record. Both parents have jobs and do not claim any benefits. None of the family have ever used any 'illegal substances'. He has to descibe himself as 'White - British' on official forms. If all of this doesn't add up to a disadvantage in todays society I dont know what does!!
