Multi track recording on a PC

Son has started to play around with recording multi-track guitar stuff on his laptop, using the line in socket directly from his FX unit. Currently he's using a freeware (download) programme 'Audacity'.

Anyone know of any others (preferably available as a free download - students dont have a lot of cash).

Don't anything these days on this stuff. Mac's come with a pre-installed piece of software called garageband (never use it in earnest though), but I believe it's very good.

I've got Cubase X/TC. Extortionately expensive, but very good. I've got a Opcode Studio 64X and Midisport 4x4 to connect all the midi equipment to my computer.

A music friend of mine uses Logic Pro on his MAC.
